Eastwood introduces new girls basketball coach Tuesday

New Eastwood girls basketball coach Jennifer Rogers has big shoes to fill taking over for the legendary Endi Vargas.

Rogers was introduced as the new head coach of the Troopers at a ceremony at the school on Tuesday.

Vargas, who won more than 400 games with the Troopers, retired last month.

Rogers previously was an assistant with the Riverside basketball team and also the head track and field coach at that school. She then spent three seasons as the head coach of the girls basketball team at Dumas High School, where Don Haskins also coached before taking over at Texas Western.

Rogers said she had just met the players but was already excited about what the team could achieve.

“I mean, anybody that’s doing anything that’s up and down and fast-paced, I’m all about it,” she said.

The Lovington, N.M. native said she hopes to bring to Eastwood what Geno Auriemma has brought to the UCONN women’s team.

“In the coaching world, you’re stealing from somebody else constantly,” said Rogers. “Of course, UConn is my team, always has been. I like what they do. But, you don’t always coach kids like what UConn has. But you try to take things into that.”
