Former Americas star RB Josh Fields ready to make impact at UTEP
It’s easy to make comparisons between former UTEP running back Aaron Jones and freshman Josh Fields.
Both are from El Paso. Both had prolific high school careers for schools in the Borderland (Fields at Americas and Jones at Burges). And then there’s the fact both committed to UTEP.
While Fields says he is honored by the comparisons, he’s not trying to be another Aaron Jones.
“I feel no pressure. I mean, what Aaron did, he did amazing things here at UTEP,” he said. “But I’m Josh Fields.”
Despite being a freshman, Fields could see plenty of playing time early. Jones is no longer at UTEP after being drafted by the Green Bay Packers and running back Quadraiz Wadley has been dealing with a shoulder injury, opening the door for Fields, who will have to learn a lot about the offense in a relatively short amount of time.
“I just want to continue his production and continue to learn the offense,” said Fields. “I’m gonna do my thing. I’m gonna be a team guy. So, I can’t wait for my four years here.”
Fields says that will rely on his versatility to see him through the early part of this career.
“I can make people miss, I can go up top, I can run you over, so I can do a mixture of things,” he said.
Fields will have to endure a trial by fire early, however, as UTEP’s first contest this upcoming season is at Oklahoma on Sept. 2.
“It’s gonna be crazy. It’s gonna be a crazy atmosphere with 100,000 fans. So, I’m ready for it.”
