El Paso Cares: 2 trucks loaded with supplies are headed to Southeast Texas

El Paso Cares sent out its first pair of tractor-trailers filled with donated supplies for the victims of Hurricane Harvey on Wednesday.

Local school districts, the El Paso New Car Dealers Association and local TV news stations teamed up to collect supplies for people affected by the storm in Southeast Texas.

“We’ve been shrink-wrapping and sorting the materials and getting it ready to ship out,” said Ron Gatlin, executive director of Procurement Services at EPISD. “We have two truck loads ready to put on the truck and they will be leaving today for Houston. “

The El Paso Cares initiative will continue to accept donations. Officials are still asking for basic needs, like diapers, underwear and socks. The public is now being asked to donate supplies to help cleanup debris, especially in some of the hardest hit areas like Corpus Christi and Rockport, Texas.

“They need rakes, shovels chainsaws, gloves,” said Luke Lowenfield, president of the El Paso New Car Dealers Association. “They don’t have to be new, but they have to be in good working condition. So that we can send a truckload over there as soon as possible and help them pick up the houses and trees and things that have been destroyed there.”

El Paso Cares collected enough items to fill several trucks. The EPISD Gamble Warehouse at 4900 Transmountain Road is housing dozens of pallets of supplies that will eventually be sent east.

If you want to donate goods, you can continue to do so at all local high schools and new car dealerships. The donation effort is being extended at least until next week.
