Border Patrol agent assaulted near San Elizario

U.S. Border Patrol supervisor Joe Romero told ABC-7 a Border Patrol Agent was assaulted while performing his duties.

“At approximately 8 a.m. this morning agents from the Ysleta station where in San Elizario working and they received a call that there was possible traffic in the area. That is … possible people that enter the country illegally through that area,” Romero said.

Romero told ABC-7 several agents were called to the area.

“But one agent, who was on his own at the time, encountered these individuals and effected an arrest,” Romero said.

The arrest soon turned into a altercation.

“He got assaulted and the individuals managed to escape,” Romero said.

The agent’s injuries are believed to be non life threatening.

“The agent did not require any medical assistance. He got a few bumps and bruises but other than that he’s going to be OK,” Romero said.

Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s office, along with Socorro Police and helicopters with Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine operations, searched the area near Glorietta Road and Luisa Guerrero Drive for the suspects.

“A few hours later they were able to locate all of the individuals,” Romero told ABC-7.
