Several state constitutional amendments show on election ballot

If you’re headed to this polls this election, among the many issues you have to consider are several new constitutional amendments for the state.

Seven, to be exact, and two of them have to do with property tax exemptions for servicemen and servicewomen and first responders, including the spouses for both communities.

Dalia De Los Santos told ABC-7 she agrees “100 percent” with amendments like these.

“They had enough courage to do a job that a lot of other people won’t do,” said De Los Santos.

At the top of the list, Proposition 1: The proposed amendment would give property tax exemptions to partially disabled veterans or their surviving spouses.

The exemptions for proposed amendment 1 stipulate the home would have to have been donated by a “charitable organization for less than the market value.”

An amendment Sarah Upton told ABC-7 can be beneficial to some, but not all.

“I don’t think they should create so many hoops for them to jump through,” said Upton. “Most likely they’re not going to use that benefit.”

Proposed amendment six also gives property tax exemptions to the spouses of first responders who were killed in the line of duty.

Diane Jones’ husband is in the army. She said she respects those who put their lives on the line for the greater good.

“It’s in the line of duty, said Jones. “They’re putting their lives before everybody else’s. The spouses also: they’re letting their spouse go out to protect everybody, not just them.”

Depending on where you live, there are other big-ticket items that could affect your community.

In Socorro, voters will be marking yes or no on a $448.5 bond for the school district, and which candidates will represent three different districts in the area.

Residents in the city of Horizon will be voting on, funnily enough, elections: when and how often to have them, in addition to formalities on running for council.

Early voting started yesterday. Click here for a list of locations.
