Draft held for high school football all-star game
Sunday afternoon, the best high school football players from the El Paso community gathered for the first ever all-star draft.
The event was organized by the Greater El Paso Football Showcase.
Every year the group of volunteers, coaching staff and sponsors put together an end of the year all-star game at the Sun Bowl.
The money raised goes towards scholarships for high school seniors.
In years past, the players were selected by the location of their school, Eastside versus Westside.
That format was abandoned this year in favor of a draft.
92 players were selected and invited to attend the draft that was held at the Ysleta School District headquarters in East El Paso.
The two teams will be called the Red Storm and the Blue Thunder.
Each team consists of coaches from across the El Paso area.
The coaches were on hand to offer their input in selecting the players through the 5 round draft.
The first overall pick went to the Blue Thunder.
The Thunder selected El Dorado quarterback Cedarious Barfield.
With their first pick, the Red Storm selected Andrew Fernandez, quarterback for the Montwood Rams.
The Greater El Paso Football Showcase All-Star Game will played Saturday, December 16th at the Sun Bowl.
