LCPD: Mother arrested after two children test positive to meth
Police arrested a woman after investigators discovered her two children tested positive for methamphetamine.
Marissa Gomez, 27, is charged with two counts of child abuse after police discovered her two children, ages eight and two, tested positive for the drug.
Gomez has addresses in Las Cruces and Silver City, New Mexico, police said.
On October 4, 2017, officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check on children at a residence at 1089 W. Amador Avenue.
Gomez allegedly told an officer other people who visit her have smoked methamphetamine in the apartment she shares with her two daughters.
The girls were administered drug tests and investigators learned they both tested positive for methamphetamine. The young girls were turned over to the custody of the state’s Children, Youth and Families Department.
An investigation revealed Gomez and her friends allegedly used meth and heroin inside her apartment regularly. Gomez voluntarily consented to a drug test and investigators learned she also tested positive for methamphetamine, officials said.
Police said children are highly susceptible to the vapors of methamphetamine and surfaces contaminated by the drug. Meth can enter the body through contact with a contaminated surface, direct ingestion and through second-hand smoke.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Gomez. She was arrested Nov. 15 by police in Silver City, N.M. Gomez was granted release the following day.
