NMSU takes down South Alabama; Aggies ready to go bowling

The New Mexico State Aggies are going bowling.

Saturday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium, the Aggies won their 6th game of the season to become bowl eligible.

NMSU took down the South Alabama Jaguars by a final of 22-17.

This is the first time the Aggies will play in a bowl game since 1960 and it’s only the 4th time in the program’s history.

The Aggies will find out Sunday which bowl game they will play in, but NMSU will most likely head to Tucson, AZ for the Arizona Bowl.

NMSU really had to earn Saturday’s win over the Jaguars.

South Alamaba jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and the Aggies were only able to respond with a pair of field goals.

Aggies would get their first touchdown of the game late in the 2nd quarter after a 9 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Rogers to Anthony Muse.

NMSU would lead at the half 13-7.

The Aggies would carry a 16-7 lead into the 4th quarter, but the Jaguars would jump back in front.

South Alabama would get a touchdown following a 17 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cole Garvin to Jordan McCray.

That would cut NMSU’s lead to 16-14.

The touchdown pass was then followed by a field goal to give the Jaguars a 17-16 lead late in the 4th quarter.

NMSU would answer and march down the field to give them a chance to win the game with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter.

The Aggies would get into the end zone with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Rogers to Muse, the 2-point conversion try that followed was no good.

NMSU was back in front 22-17 with just 32 seconds left in the game.

That would be the final score as the fans stormed the field realizing they witnessed an event 57 years in the making.

If the Aggies do accept the Arizona Bowl invitation that would be great news for NMSU fans since the drive from Las Cruces to Tucson is about 4 hours.

The Aggies will most likely face an opponent from the Mountain West Conference.

Some bowl projections have that opponent being Utah State.
