Downtown lights up for the holidays

With 23 days until Christmas, El Paso’s tree downtown is finally lit up. Saturday’s celebration of lights was beautiful just like every other year. Some were drawn to the downtown celebration for the first time, others returned to continue their family tradition.

“As a little girl I just remember a lot of lights, a lot of joy and family time,” said Cecilia Vidaña.

“It’s just colorful, and full of memories, and family time that I have memories of that I want them to have as well,” said Haydee Renteria, her sister.

As people waited, the countdown began, the trees and decorations lighting everyone’s faces and kicking off the parade. Thousands crowded along the streets and colorful lights and floats made their way through downtown.

Marching bands and fire trucks paraded by crowded, smiling faces, even had some visitors from far far away.

When we asked what people’s favorite parts were, everyone had a different answer.

“Just walking and making everybody happy,” said one young girl, dressed as Princess Leia.

To those watching:

“The kids with the lights and their outfits are just beautiful. That’s what I enjoyed the most,” said a woman watching with a smile on her face.

One couple couple hoped this colorful celebration becomes tradition as their family grows.

“The baby is due near Christmas! Hopefully we’ll be here next year with him,” said Adrienne and Joshua Blancarte.
