Community Champions: Las Cruces High School girls basketball team
Las Cruces High School has not one, but two undefeated varsity basketball teams.
Yes, both the girls and boys basketball teams have yet to lose this season and enter 2018 with 14-0 records.
We caught up with the girls team Wednesday to get their take on the season so far and what’s to come.
Head Coach Matt Abney says this is not a “championship or bust” season for the ‘Dawgs. But he admitted that a state title is possibly if the team continues to get better each week.
“Ultimately, you know, we are competing for a state championship,” said Abney. “We feel like we’re one of the better teams in the state. Our goal is to keep improving and get better. And hopefully in March we’re there at the end, you know, hopefully winning a Blue Trophy.”
Las Cruces has yet to allow any opponent to reach the 50-point mark in a game, while they themselves have surpassed that point total in all but one contest this season.
That has the ‘Dawgs ranked number three in the state of New Mexico, according to MaxPreps.
But things won’t slow down in District play. The ‘Dawgs have two matchups ahead with Hobbs, a 14-1 team that is currently ranked fourth in the state by MaxPreps.
Another district opponent, Carlsbad, is 12-2 thus far.
But Abney is confident that good things are in store for the ‘Dawgs if they stay focused.
“It’s been a nice athletic season for football as well as boys and girls basketball. So, we’re excited to see where this thing goes for both us and the boys,” said Abney.
