City officials set to inspect vacant buildings located in downtown

City officials say four downtown buildings are being inspected this week and next week. They said the buildings slated for inspection are vacant and can pose safety issues for the public.

Officials said they’ve received numerous complaints about graffiti and about people and animals getting inside the buildings.

On Wednesday, they inspected the Caples building at 300 East San Antonio Street. The owners are Franklin Acquisitions LLC the last time it was inspect was in 2016.

Thursday they will inspect the Kress building at 211 North Mesa Street and the Hayman-Krupp building at 117 West Overland Street. The owner of the Kress building is Reliable Development LP and the last time it was inspected was in 2016. The owner of Hayman-Krupp is Franklin Group LP, that last time it was inspected was in 2007.

Officials will also be inspecting the Fallas Paredes building at 301 East San Antonio. The date for that inspection has not yet been determined. The owner of the building is J & M Properties LP the last time it was inspected was in 2014.

Jessica Herrera, the director of the city’s Economic and International Development Department, told ABC-7 that the inspections aren’t only focused on safety but are also in keeping with the beautification of the area.

“We have the streetcar line which will start to get very busy over the next year. We have beautification and public improvements that we are making. So you have a lot of pedestrians, a lot of street traffic and it’s important that we address these issues and that we are proactive about it,” Herrera said.
