Former teacher gets deferred probation after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting student

The former Riverside Middle School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old student was sentenced to deferred probation after pleading guilty.

In October 2017, police charged Adam Lee Newport, 35, with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student. The district attorney’s office told ABC-7 Newport pleaded guilty to several counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, Indecency with a Child and Improper Relationship.

Newport was sentenced to 10 years deferred probation. “The defendant’s punishment reflects and takes into account the child victim, her continued safety and the safety of the community,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

The 13-year-old girl told detectives Newport would take her into an office in the locker room where he would kiss her and expose himself, a complaint affidavit states.

The victim told police, that on one occasion, Newport exposed himself, grabbed her arm, and forced her to touch him. The victim also told police, that on two occasions, Newport put his hand down her pants and underwear, then sexually assaulted her.

The complaint affidavit states the victim said Newport kissed her breast on one occasion. When she asked him to stop, Newport allegedly told the victim “he had control of the grade book and not to try him,” the document states.

Police also recovered photos Newport allegedly sent to the victim via text messages. The photos allegedly show Newport’s penis, the complaint affidavit states. In the messages, Newport allegedly told the victim “there were still many sexual acts (he) wanted to do with the victim.”

Newport resigned his position at the Ysleta Independent School District shortly after his arrest, a spokeswoman said. A search of online records from the State Board for Educator Certification shows Newport is certified to teach health, physical education and special education.

The district attorney’s office told ABC-7 Newport will no longer be able to teach, and as part of the probation terms, “must register for life as a sex offender every 90 days, must meet curfew from 8 pm to 6pm, cannot have unsupervised contact with any minor child, cannot contact the victim of the offense, and cannot supervise or participate in any program that includes as participants or recipients persons who are 17 years of age or younger.”

Newport cannot go within 1,000 feet of a premises where “children commonly gather, including a school, day care facility, playground, public or private youth center, public swimming pool or video arcade facility.

Newport was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and complete 120 hours of community service. He will also have to attend psychological counseling sessions for sex offenders with an individual or organization which provides sex offender treatment or counseling.
