Fans react to UTEP naming Rodney Terry as new basketball coach
UTEP fans and alumni are reacting to the news that the university is hiring Rodney Terry as the new men’s head basketball coach.
“I think he will be very good for the university,” one UTEP fan said.
“They wanted to make sure that we can start on a new road to being successful,” another said.
In a statement, the president of the university Diana Natalicio said Terry is an effective recruiter and she’s looking forward to his leadership on the court.
The conversation continued on 600 ESPN El Paso.
“There are a lot of coaches who are singing his praises as a guy who can bring in talent,” radio host Duke Keith said. “UTEP needs this.”
However Keith had some reservations. After reports stated Terry had said he took Fresno State as far as it could go, Keith added, “Think of if Tim Floyd had said that about UTEP, I’ve taken UTEP as far as it can go, in public, yikes.”
Terry has been head coach at Fresno State since 2011. UTEP still needs approval by the UT System Board of Regents before bringing him on board.
