EPPD grows for first in 10 years, announces recruitment plans

The El Paso Police Department’s force will grow for the first time in 10 years.

The department has added 26 positions but police officials say that number is small compared to what the number they need to add.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, EPPD presented strategies to help with the force’s growth.

The department will hold two academy classes starting in July, with a minimum target of 120 recruits. It also plans to hire six new police service specialists who will enhance the recruiting efforts.

Council also heard police officials talk about how more cameras around the city will help officers prioritize calls.

EPPD will also receive 150 new police cars and 18 police motorcycles on July 30, 2018.
