Local NASA engineer a finalist in motorcycle design competition
A local mechanical engineer for NASA is in the running to win a $10,000 cash prize for his motorcycle design. He entered his design in “The Wrench Scout Bobber Build Off”, a competition only open to amateurs.
Las Crucen Alfredo Juarez has always had a passion for motorcycles. He bought a MIG welder in college when he started experimenting with metal fabrication and building his own tools. As a Mechanical Engineer for NASA, his expertise is used on some of the most advanced projects in the world. He still works on bikes in his spare time and wants to try building a custom Scout Bobber.
Juarez is one of twelve finalists from across the country, and the only one from the Borderland. Indian Motorcycle along with Roland Sands, Jason Paul Michaels, Jordan Mastagni and Satya Kraus started this competition looking for three motorcycle craftsmen to turn stock Scout Bobber Motorcycles into custom works of art.
The next three finalists who are chosen will receive $10,000 to build onto a stock Scout Bobber. The three custom motorcycles will be unveiled in Minneapolis in July. A fan vote for the best motorcycle will follow.
The winner will be announced at the Legendary Buffalo Chip during the 2018 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. They will receive a spread in Hot Bike Magazine in addition to the $10,000 cash prize.
For Juarez though, it’s not about the cash prize, it’s about the experience.
“Really the focus, the real end goal for me is the motorcycle. I love to build and given the opportunity to have a motorcycle I can modify and then a budget to do it, that’s all I care about,” says Juarez.
