CISD swears in new board member
Canutillo Independent School District board members swore in new board member Tuesday evening.
Board members appointed Sergio Coronado as a board member last week.
Throughout the day ABC-7 received several calls from district residents asking how he was appointed without public input or elections.
Sergio Coronado is no stranger to the district.
Coronado was on the board from 2002 – 2014 and served as board president for five years.
Board President Blanca Trout told ABC-7 board members are usually elected but the reason Coronado was appointed was because former board member Rachel Quintana resigned.
Trout told ABC-7 if a person resigns, falls ill or is missing for a long period of time the board can appoint someone to fill in the position.
Trout says candidates are selected by their experience and a vote is taken to select the final candidate.
During the upcoming November elections Coronado’s position will be filled by someone who is elected and that could be him if he decides to run.
Coronado said he’s ready for the task ahead.
“I think what we really need to address is that we continue the focus on the students of the district. That’s who we serve, that’s who we are entrusted as trustees of the district, with the resources of the district to make sure that they are used in the best possible way to give educational opportunities to our students and of course to be accountable to the community,” Coronado said.
The board will also be exploring the possibility of creating single member voting districts, which means people from certain areas of the district can run to represent their area on the school board.
