Borunda Firth to step down as City Attorney

The City of El Paso announced City Attorney Sylvia Borunda Firth has resigned from her position, effective May 31.

A reasoning for her resignation has not been made available.

Borunda Firth has been employed by the City for more than 20 years and has served as the City Chief of Staff and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.

She was appointed as City Attorney in December of 2011.

Borunda Firth’s initial City Attorney contract was from 2011 to 2014 with an automatic renewal for a one-year term. The contract agreement automatically renewed on a year-to-year basis, unless the City notified 60 days before Borunda Firth’s contract expired.

Her annual base salary was $190,000, according to her initial contract.

Borunda Firth was eligible for a five percent salary increase after the second year of her contract, pending an annual evaluation conduct by the mayor, city manager and City Council.

Borunda Firth’s initial contract states the City has no obligations to pay cash severance payment, in event of resignation before her contract expired. She is entitled to the balance of her sick or vacation leave if she gave a 30 day written notice to the city.

She was an exempt employee for the City.
