Woman shot and killed by Border Patrol agent identified
Medical examiners have identified an undocumented immigrant killed by the Border Patrol in Texas.
They say she is Claudia Patricia Gomez Gonzales, a 20-year-old from Guatemala.
Her family says she came to the U.S. to find a job after graduating recently with an accounting degree.
Meanwhile, the Border Patrol is changing its account of Wednesday’s incident in Rio Bravo.
The original statement said an agent opened fire after being attacked by a group of people armed with blunt objects.
But a new statement issued Friday indicates the group “rushed” the officer, rather than attacking him or her.
Officials say three other undocumented immigrants were arrested at the scene. The FBI and Texas Rangers are now investigating the incident.
Meantime, the family of the Guatemalan immigrant is demanding justice for the young woman.
Dominga Vicente says her niece migrated to escape poverty. She said Friday that after graduating as a forensic accountant Gomez was unable to attend college or find a job so she left Guatemala.
Guatemala’s foreign ministry condemned the shooting and also confirmed her identity.
