Phone scam targets county residents

A reported phone scam where the caller identifies himself as an employee of the U.S. Marshals Service and requests a payment is hitting El Paso County residents.

The scammer claims that the victim has been neglecting jury duty and must make a payment or report to the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim is then instructed to purchase DOT Money Packs or gift cards in order to fulfill the payment. The scammer then cashes out the amount paid by the victim with the serial numbers from the money cards.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said that residents cannot be asked for a payment for outstanding warrants via phone.

To report a fraudulent call, the El Paso Police Department can be reached at 915-832-4400. Scam calls can also be reported to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 915-832-4408.
