EPPD: Driver failed to yield right of way, struck and killed woman walking with grandson

Police say a driver failed to yield the right of way and fatally struck a 71-year-old woman attempting to cross the street with her grandson on a crosswalk.

The wreck happened at 7:50 p.m. on June 19, 2018 on the 7900 block of Visccount.

Police said Shelebey Kinney was operating a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze west on Viscount. At the same time, , Margarita Lopez and her grandson, 4-year-old Michael Sebastian Calderon, were crossing in a marked crosswalk from North to South.

Police said Kinney failed to yield the right of way and struck Lopez and Calderon. The elderly woman and child were rushed to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Lopez died as a result of the injuries, police said.

Police said Kinney and her passenger remained at the scene. Investigators determined a “failure to yield the right of way on the part of Shelebey Kinney as a contributing factor in this collision. This investigation continues.”

Police did not say whether Kinney will be charged.
