A woman identified as Gabriela Estrada and her four-month-old son died.
Authorities told El Diario de Juárez a drunk driver, Davila Escobedo, crossed a red light on Boulevard Manuel Gomez Morin and crashed with the family’s car.
Estrada’s partner, Alberto Mercado, remains hospitalized in El Paso in critical condition.
El Diario is reporting he suffered a brain hemorrhage.
Alberto’s brother, Arturo, spoke to ABC-7 about what happened.
“Everybody is devastated,” Arturo Mercado said. “This is the kind of thing that blind sides you and you’re never prepared for.”
The family hasn’t told Alberto about the death of his wife and son.
“That type of news could really effect him. He was asking me about her and it just broke my heart. I just told him, ‘little brother, you have to be strong, your family needs you, so just focus on that, focus on getting better, Arturo Mercado said.”
Three other children who were inside the vehicle were injured during the crash, but they’re expected to recover.
The alleged drunk driver was charged and taken into custody.
