Las Cruces City Council opposes building of nuclear waste facility
The city of Las Cruces is coming out against a proposal to build a nuclear waste storage facility near Carlsbad.
City Council voted 4 to 3 on Monday to oppose the plan by Holtec International, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News.
The New Jersey-based company specializing in nuclear storage wants to build a facility 35 miles east of Carlsbad. Carlsbad is about 150 miles east of Las Cruces.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is accepting public comment on the proposal until the end of this month.
