See how Texas, New Mexico fare when it comes to overcoming student debt

A new study shows where Texas and New Mexico rank among the states and Washington, D.C. when it comes to student loan debt.

Student loans make up the largest component of household debt for Americans, according to financial website WalletHub.com.

Researchers for Wallet Hub reported that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that so far this year, outstanding college loan balances stood at $1.4 trillion.

Wallet Hub looked at average student debt, earning opportunities, and unemployment rates for young adults, and deemed Texas to be number 35 in the nation.

New Mexico is ranked 39.

New Mexico also had the lowest average student loan debt and the second highest unemployment rate for people aged 25-34.
