“We were encouraged:” Voter turnout high in Las Cruces GO bond
About 25 percent of eligible Las Cruces residents participated in this week’s general obligation bond election, according to the Doña Ana County Clerk’s office.
“We were really encouraged to see so many people find the value in voting at home,” said Deputy County Clerk Lindsey Bachman.
Bachman said voter turnout was higher than the mayoral election. She said the state requires all special elections to implement the mail-in ballot system.
“So, we’ll see this again in Las Cruces,” Bachman said. “We’ll see this across the state. We’re all trying to share lessons learned as we encounter these new elections.”
The city passed all four items in the $35.6 million bond:
$16.9 million for park and recreational fields $9.8 million for a new stray animal and adoption center in addition to administration offices on the site of the existing facility $6.2 million to replace Fire Station No. 3, which was built in 1967, and increase the department’s capability to respond to the increasing demand $2.7 million walking jogging and biking trails
