LCPD: Man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting 5 year-old girl
A Las Cruces man may face extensive prison time after pleading guilty to charges in the sexual assault of a 5 year-old child he knew.
James Champ, 41, pled guilty to two counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under 13, after the Las Cruces Police Department investigated a situation involving sexual contact between Champ and a minor that occurred eight and a half years ago.
According to court documents, Las Cruces police were notified of a possible sexual assault that took place when the girl was 5 years-old. Police say Champ knew the victim at the time the assault took place.
Court documents go on to say Champ threatened the victim, saying he would kill her mother if she told anyone about the assault.
Additionally, documents state Champ is suspected of using drugs and may have been under the influence at the time.
Champ is currently awaiting sentencing, although it is possible he could face 30 years in prison.
