Actor RJ Mitte receives key to Las Cruces at anti-bullying news conference
Actor RJ Mitte, best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the AMC series Breaking Bad, received the key to Las Cruces during a news conference for anti-bullying Monday morning.
At the podium, Mitte said, “Being awarded this key to the city is truly a remarkable experience, and something that I love that I’m allowed to be here and have an impact on the kids.”
Mayor Ken Miagishima said, “Fourteen-percent of Dona Ana county students and 18% of all students throughout New Mexico have been bullied.”
“We might not ever be able to get rid of bullying but what we can do is help prevent it and help being there with peer to peer support and showing our students that you have the ability to protect yourself,” said Mitte. He added, “You have the ability to protect others. Don’t let limitation or the idea of can’t weight you.”
Las Cruces Public School board member Maria A. Flores told ABC-7, “We are always hopeful to prevent and protect our students. That is our mission of our board and our district.”
Mitte, just like his character “Flynn” on the AMC series Breaking Bad, has cerebral palsy, a disorder that affects body movement and muscle coordination. Mitte said he experienced bullying throughout his life.
