Aaron Jones says he’s not frustrated by lack of carries
Some Fantasy Football players might be a bit frustrated at the lack of carries for Packers running back Aaron Jones, but Jones says he’s not concerned.
The former UTEP star had seven carries for 40 yards in the team’s loss against the Lions on Sunday.
He’s averaging 6.1 yards per carry this year in limited action after posting 5.5 yards per attempt in his rookie season.
He also carried the ball 11 times against Buffalo and just six times against Washington in his first game back from a two-game suspension. In total, that’s 24 carries through three games this season.
And even though Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers told reporters last week that he wants to see Jones get more touches, the Packers running back often goes missing for long stretches of the game. But he told reporters this week that he understands splitting carries with Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams.
“I mean, it’s a team game,” said Jones. “So, I know there are other players on the team who are just as capable as I am. That’s why they’re getting opportunities as well. And you’ve just got to be ready when your number is called.”
Jones currently averages 5.7 yards per carry over the course of his young career so far. Montgomery’s career average is 4.9 while Williams trails both at 3.6 yards per attempt.
Though he says it doesn’t bother him now, Jones believes he can always talk to the coaching staff if he questions his lack of touches.
“The coaches, they have an open-door policy. So, if you have a problem, you can always go in and talk to them,” said Jones.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy was also asked about the lack of touches for Jones and said playing time is based on more than yards per carry. He argued that circumstances, such as playing without the lead and running an uptempo no-huddle offense, have hindered the team’s ability to get the ball to Jones.
“We have three young men we believe in, three guys that contribute,” said McCarthy. “There’s more to playing the position than just running the football.”
