Gap in border barrier allows migrants to enter U.S. illegally near Sunland Park

People living in the Sunland Park, New Mexico area say they are seeing immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally through a gap in the border barrier.

That gap in question is southwest of the Cristo Rey monument.

People living along the wall on the Mexico side tell ABC-7 they see immigrants crossing from Mexico into the US all the time.

One man says he sees large groups crossing at night, and that he sees the light shining from their cellular phones.

“Since there is no fence, they can cross over easily. They cross around three at a time,” said Cesar Martinez.

Border Patrol agents keep a close eye on the section of the fence.

Benjamin Lara, who lives in a Sunland Park neighborhood, tells ABC-7 he sees the migrants on occasion and believes the crossings are a normal part of life along the border.

Lara says he worries about the crossings because he doesn’t know who the people crossing are.

He says he’s well aware of a caravan headed to the U.S. from Central America and hopes they do not try to cross through the gap in the fence near his home.
