EPPD: DWI driver dragged police officer, led responding officers on pursuit

A man pulled over on suspicion of DWI attempted to flee from a police officer after he was pulled over, dragging and injuring the officer, police said.

Tomas Barraza, 22, was stopped for alleged speeding on the 1300 block of Zaragosa shortly after 2 a.m. on November 9, 2018.

The officer attempted to detain Barraza, who allegedly accelerated away from the scene and dragged the officer several feet.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Other officers located Barraza driving in an eastside neighborhood. Barraza allegedly refused to stop, but came the police pursuit came to an end when Barraza’s vehicle became disabled, police said.

Barraza was taken into custody after a brief struggle and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.

Police charged Barraza with Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant, two counts of Evading Arrest, and Resisting Arrest. Barraza’s bonds totaled over $100,000. Additional charges are pending.
