El Paso Mayor Invited to Attend Inauguration of Mexico’s President-Elect
El Paso Mayor Dee Margo and his wife, Adair Margo, have been invited to attend the inauguration of Mexican president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador, according to Olivia Zepeda, the mayor’s chief of staff.
Lopez-Obrador, who won the Mexican presidential election in a landslide, will be sworn in as president Saturday in Mexico City.
Zepeda told ABC-7 it is extremely unusual for mayors to be invited to these ceremonies, generally reserved for heads of state. Margo will be one of 16 U.S. mayors in attendance, including mayors from California, Arizona and the Texas cities of San Antonio, Austin and Brownsville.
Mayor Margo told ABC-7 he has attended the inauguration of several U.S. presidents, including Ronald Reagan.
The itinerary for guests includes a reception at the Franz Mayer Museum, a tour of the San Lazaro Legislative Palace and an optional visit to the National Art Museum.
The U.S. delegation includes 140 guests, including Sen. John Cornyn, (R-Texas), Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and presidential advisor Ivanka Trump.
President Donald Trump will not attend Saturday’s inauguration because he will be at the G-20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
