Early voting under way for two city council runoff races

UPDATE: Of the 98,204 registered voters living in the Upper Valley, on the west side and in Downtown El Paso, only 1 percent have voted in the two runoff elections that will decide the remaining city council seats.

According to the El Paso County Elections Office website, 1,307 people have cast a ballot since early voting began on Nov. 28 through Saturday. Monday’s vote totals have not been added to the count.

Early voting ends on Dec. 11.

In District 1, incumbent Peter Svarzbein is looking to keep his seat as city representative, but challenger Veronica Frescas is trailing closed behind him.

Neither one got more than fifty percent of the vote on Election Day Nov. 6.

Results of voter turnout from the El Paso County Elections department reported 26,535 ballots were recorded.

Svarzbein got 30.58 percent of the vote, Frescas got 28.07 percent of the vote. There were two other candidates in the race.

In District 8, a similar scenario in the race between Rep. Cissy Lizarraga and Nicholas Vasquez. Neither candidate met the more than fifty percent threshold to win the race.

The county elections department reported 15,404 votes were cast in District 8.

Lizarraga only had 43 percent of the vote; Vasquez got nearly 16 percent.

Residents must live in their respective districts and be registered by November 15 to be allowed to cast a ballot.

Election Day is December 15.
