Tens of thousands of gallons of gasoline spilled in Chamberino, NM

A hazmat crew is working to clean up a gasoline spill at 4220 Three Saints Road in Chamberino, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Friday.

ABC-7 has learned a 12 inch pipe burst, spilling approximately 30,000 gallons of gasoline into the ditch running alongside Three Saints Rd. The spill extended north and south approximately to W. Berino and Harding Road.

Kinder Morgan, the company responsible for the pipeline, was notified of a leak at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

It isolated the location of the leak and has been working to repair it. The surrounding area was secured and three homes in the vicinity have been evacuated for safety. There are multiple hazmat crews and emergency vehicles on scene.

“Upon discovery, the impacted 12-inch pipeline segment, running from El Paso to Tucson, was isolated and shut down,” Kinder Morgan said in a statement emailed to ABC-7, “At this time, Kinder Morgan is working closely with local authorities on cleanup and restoration plans, and appropriate regulatory agencies have been notified. An investigation into the cause and quantity of the release will be conducted.”

Kinder Morgan, the parent company of El Paso Natural Gas, is headquartered in Houston. One of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America, Kinder Morgan owns an interest or operates approximately 84,000 miles of pipelines and 152 terminals. Its pipelines transport natural gas, refined petroleum products, crude oil, carbon dioxide (CO2) and more.
