Community Champion: El Paso Stars volleyball prepares for major tournament

Club volleyball teams from across Texas and New Mexico will convene this weekend for a major tournament at the El Paso Convention Center.

Among the local organizations competing is the El Paso Stars, a group founded by Joseph Dawson about a decade ago that trains year-round at Stars Haven volleyball court on Ripley Drive.

The Stars’ organization will be competing with other youth volleyball clubs from places like Las Cruces, Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo, and more in the hopes of securing a spot at a regional tournament in Albuquerque and then perhaps the national tournament in Indianapolis later this year.

“It’s the greatest opportunity of my life because my parents and everyone are supporting me and paying so much money so I could be out there,” said Stars player Allison Miller.

Last year’s tournament featured more than 200 teams competing in various age groups and divisions.

The Stars are part of a rapidly-growing club volleyball scene in El Paso, and they’re looking to make their mark this weekend with a good showing.

“Well, the El Paso Stars started out about ten years ago when I wanted to see something that could help the community,” said coach and founder Joseph Dawson. “So, I started this [club] where we could have girls learning volleyball year-round.”

If the team is going to succeed, they know they’ll have to rely on their strong team chemistry.

“I think it’s the best club for me. I love [Coach Dawson]. He’s so passionate about the sport. We have a really good bond. They’re like my sisters to me,” said Stars player Emily Blacksher.

The competition is expected to be fierce, but the Stars will be ready.

“I’m always excited to play any team, said Dawson. “There’s some outstanding teams out there. But we just have a ‘can do’ attitude in always wanting to play and play the best.
