NMSU wins on another buzzer-beater, stunning CSU Bakersfield in overtime

Trevelin Queen hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift New Mexico State over CSU Bakersfield Thursday night in yet another thrilling win for the Aggies.

It was a back and forth game in which both teams built double-digit leads throughout the contest.

NMSU jumped out to a 23-6 lead and looked to be in complete control before the Roadrunners stormed back in the late portions of the first half and early part of the second stanza.

After a furious charge by CSU Bakersfield, the Aggies then found themselves down by 10 with just under two minutes to play.

But some solid free throw shooting and careless CSUB turnovers helped the Aggies fight back. A late steal and Terrell Brown dunk tied the game at 62 with just a few seconds to play. CSUB’s Jarkel Joiner fired a shot at the buzzer that was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

It appeared as if OT might not even settle the contest. The game was tied again with just under 15 seconds to go when Joiner made a series of moves to create space for a two-point jumper from the left wing to put his team up by two.

The Aggies chose not to call timeout and raced up the court with the clock winding down.

Trevelin Queen would end up with the ball beyond the arc on the right wing and fired a shot as time expired that splashed home to send the Aggies into a frenzy.

The refs would review the play, but in the end they determined that Queen’s shot was a three-pointer and he did get the shot off in time.

NMSU now sits alone atop the WAC standings, one game ahead of Grand Canyon after GCU fell in a stunner to UTRGV.

The Aggies will meet Grand Canyon Saturday with a chance to take a two-game lead in the leauge standings with a victory.
