Family continues to grieve months after Tornillo homicide
Even with this Saturday’s arrest, the son of a man killed in Tornillo last July said his family has not yet found closure.
“We’re not going to be living our lives with hate and vengeance, because it is not our place to judge,” said Miguel Rivera Jr.
Last July, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in Tornillo near Alameda Avenue and Silverman Road. Upon arriving to the scene, they found two gunshot victims: 63-year-old Miguel Rivera Sr. and 44-year-old Abelardo Moreno, acccording to the department.
Rivera Sr. died of his wounds at the hospital, investigators said.
Seven months later, deputies arrested 41-year-old Eduardo Garza Santillana in connection with the crime.
“We’ve been waiting for this for seven months now,” Rivera Jr. said. “It was hard to just sit by just waiting. You know, week after week, month after month.”
Garza Santillana faces charges of capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the sheriff’s office. His bonds total $2,250,000.000.
Rivera Jr. told ABC-7 that he is very grateful for the hard work of detectives, but his family will not find closure until someone serves time for the murder of his father.
“We just want closure for ourselves with a conviction,” Rivera Jr. said.
