Religious leaders meet at the border to discuss immigration

Catholic Bishops and social justice leaders from border cities in the U.S. and Mexico gathered in the Borderland Tuesday to discuss migration issues.

The Tex-Mex Bishops Conference is a three-day meeting held in partnership with the HOPE Border Institute in order to strategize new ways to strengthen the collective impact of the faith community on the topic at the Anapra Port of Entry.

“In the approximately 25 years that the Tex-Mex Bishops have been meeting they have addressed many common concerns regarding life on the Texas Mexico border,” El Paso Bishop Mark J. Seitz said in a news release. “Of all the years they have met there has never been a more timely moment or appropriate place for them to gather.”

Summit participants also include interfaith leaders, lay advocates, researchers and policy analysts. Notably, Rev. Robert Stark from the Vatican Migrants and Refugees Section will engage with faith leaders from Monterrey, Tijuana, Tucson and Matamoros along with representatives from the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, CLINIC, Faith in Action and Catholic Charities.
