Community Champion: Instagram reaches out to local teen to help promote her music

You may not know her name yet, but Instagram is hoping soon you’ll be more familiar with Sarah Murillo’s work.

When Instagram reached out to Murillo with an offer to help promote her cover songs, she was skeptical at first.

“I wasn’t sure if it was a scam or something, but it wasn’t so that’s good,” said Murillo.

Instagram sent $30 to Murillo’s account for her to promote a post of her singing.

Since then, the post has gotten over 1,000 views and likes on instagram.

Although singing is something Murillo is passionate about, she also manages to split her time between other school activities at Bel Air High School.

“I’m in the physical therapy program at Bel Air. I’ve been a part of the volleyball team all four years of high school, and I’m a part of the art program,” said Murillo.

Murillo’s hard work does not go unnoticed by her teachers and coaches.

“She’s one of those few kids that no matter what you put in front of them they’re going to do well at,” said Bel Air High School art teacher Ramiro Ordonez.

“We’re proud of Sarah. She represents Bel Air very well. She’s a very good representation of what this community is,” said Cecilia Moreno Gallegos, Sarah’s volleyball coach at Bel Air High School.

At just 17 years old, Murillo manages to remain at the top of her class while juggling multiple extracurricular activities.

She has a simple message for other young students who may think they don’t have the time to achieve all of their dreams:

“Don’t ever limit yourself to just one thing. You can always find the time to do something. I never thought I was good at art and I never thought I was good at singing, but I tried it, and somehow people like it, so it’s cool.”
