Bulldawgs and Knights meet up in first round of high school basketball playoffs
It was the second time in a week that Onate and Las Cruces High Played each other.
The two finished the season locking horns last week with the Bulldawgs winning 50 to 43.
After the seedings came out Las Cruces High was confused by being given the second seed in the tournament rather then the first.
Their reason being they never lost a game with a perfect record on the season.
Onate seemed content with their 15th seed and prepared for the first round which was to played at Las Cruces High.
The game went back and forth with multiple lead changes.
It all came down to the last seconds of the game.
With 12 seconds remaining, knotted up at 52 the Bulldawg’s Marcus Scott misses the shot and the Knights get the rebound.
Ricky Lujan brings the ball up the court, almost losing control of his dribble.
He drives the lane and gets fouled by a Las Cruces High player granting him two foul shots.
With the gym rocking, Lujan makes his first free throw to put the Knights on top by a single point.
He would miss the second and the Bulldawgs would get the ball back.
With a second remaining the inbound pass went to Scott who could not line up the buzzer beater.
15th seed Onate upsets second seed Las Cruces High 53 to 52.
Lujan said after the game, “We tried to implement more patience on the offensive end and the defensive end.”
The Knights will play the Cleveland High Storm next.
