Las Cruces Border Patrol agent helps deliver baby girl on I-10
A U.S. Border Patrol agent, who is also a certified emergency medical technician, helped a pregnant woman deliver her baby girl on I-10 in between Deming and Las Cruces, the U.S. Border Patrol said.
U.S. Border Patrol Agent responded to a medical emergency on Interstate 10, between Deming and Las Cruces, and ended up assisting a pregnant woman deliver her baby girl.
The Las Cruces Border Patrol Station received a call about a medical emergency just before noon on Sunday, March 10, 2019.
Agents were notified about the emergency at mile marker 116 off Interstate 10, about four miles west of the Border Patrol checkpoint.
An agent working at the checkpoint responded to the area, spotted the vehicle, and realized a woman had gone into labor.
“The agent then sprang into action, rolled up his sleeves, and assisted the woman in welcoming a baby to this world. This all occurred on the side of the interstate as traffic continued to speed by,” said the Border Patrol in a news release.
The woman, a 23-year-old citizen from Deming, and her newborn child, were then transported to Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces via ambulance.
“Often times Border Patrol agents are the closest law enforcement officers to many emergencies. That is why they have to wear many hats and take on many roles to ensure the safety of the public that they swore to defend,” said the federal agency.
