Chris Jans named WAC Coach of the Year for second straight season

New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Chris Jans was once again named the Don Haskins WAC Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Jans has now won the award, which is named for legendary UTEP/Texas Western head coach Don Haskins, in each of his first two seasons with NMSU.

The Aggies are 27-4 so far this season after posting a 28-6 record one year ago, meaning Jans is 55-10 so far in his tenure with the program.

NMSU is currently riding a 16-game winning streak entering the WAC Tournament, where they will meet Chicago State Thursday in the quarterfinals.

The WAC also announced other award winners Tuesday including the conference’s first team, which includes NMSU guard Terrell Brown. Brown was also named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team, comprised of players in their first season at a school.

Guard A.J. Harris was honored as a member of the WAC Second Team and was also named to the conference’s all-defensive team. Meanwhile, forward Eli Chuha joins Harris as a member of the second team.

Jake Toolson of Utah Valley was recognized as the WAC Player of the Year.
