Community Champions: Texas Performance Volleyball clinches national bid

A local volleyball club is proving that old mantra that hard work and dedication pay off.

Texas Performance Volleyball (TXP) clinched their spot in a USA Volleyball national tournament later this year with a solid performance at regionals in Ruidoso over the weekend.

The team competed in the 18-year-old division of the SURVA Regional Championships recently and is now moving on to nationals.

But they say it’s the time they put into the game when no one’s looking that makes all the difference.

“We came in here every week up to three times, two hours each practice. The girls put in 100-percent, even 110-percent,” said setter Sophia Chacon. “Our motto this year is ‘One-percent.’ So, every time we come into practice, we’re getting one-percent better.”

The club is comprised of local high school players who come together in the offseason. Coach Adam Ortiz said the team is primarily made up of players from west side schools, but they have players coming all the way from Eastlake as well.

He added that the team is never out of a match because they have the ability to adapt on the fly.

“I think it’s our ability to come back in matches when we’re down. And maybe when things aren’t working well, we change it up and make adjustments. And then we play a lot better after,” said Ortiz.
