Windy rainy weather uproots trees causes highways to shut down

This afternoon heading into the evening was the height of the winds and rain in the borderland.

In South Central El Paso, Jesus Ramirez was shocked to see two trees had been ripped out of the ground and thrown into his yard by the strong winds, he said ” “I heard a loud thunder-like noise and I turned around and the tree was on the ground.”

Ramirez said his truck was damaged by the fence, but he’s thankful that his kids were not hurt, “It (the wind) is a huge concern since I have four kids, I didn’t let them play outside today because of the strong winds.”

Another tree was taken down by the winds in East El Paso, this one falling into the driveway, and partially hitting the roof of a house. Neighbors told ABC 7 that nobody was home when it happened, and no one was hurt.

The weather also caused major problems on the roads. I-10 near Vinton was temporarily closed due to a semi-truck that jack-knifed and was hanging dangerously close to oncoming traffic. The highway in that area was shut down for nearly two hours. Transmountain was also closed in both directions and will remain closed overnight, because of the strong winds. Rain and wind were also an issue in downtown. Some people were prepared for the weather, bundled up in coats and rain gear, but others were left scrambling for cover.
