” He was always a nobody, but he made something out of nothing, and he got to where he’s at, ” Hanna said.
Two years ago, Hanna was wrapping up film school in New Mexico. His goal was to nab a sit-down interview with the former Dallas Cowboys star.
But, he knew he had to take a unique approach in order to gain Romo’s blessing.
” I felt like if i would go to managers, if I would go to agents, they would shut me down immediately, ” Hanna said. ” I was just a student. ”
Hanna decided to reach out to Romo’s old high school coaches in Wisconsin. Hanna sold them on the idea, and in turn, the coaches sold Romo on the idea.
” H e sat down — 10 turned into 15, 15 turned into 30 minutes and we had a great interview, ” Hanna said. ” This was two years ago, summer of 2017. We looked at everything and we were like this is pretty great. I felt like we had something cute, but I felt like I wanted to make this film even more powerful. ”
Hanna and his crew at ZGN productions put together a sneak peek. They sent it to Romo . A year later, they all linked up once again.
” T his time we had a whole hour interview. We were able to get more into the nitty gritty questions like the Packers game and retirement, and not winning a Super Bowl, ” Hanna said.
Once Hanna gained Romo’s trust, he got access to family members and friends.
” I got to meet Tony Romo . That’s a definitely, ” Hanna said. ” W e interviewed his grandpa and his grandma who are — his grandpa is actually — he was an immigrant from Coahuila, Mexico. ”
The title of the documentary is “Now or Never: A Tony Romo Story. ” Hanna said he’s done filming everything, but he needs help from the community to make this project come to life.
He’s raising money to pay for the NFL’s licensing fees in order to get permission to use the league’s footage.

“If you were a Romo hater or if you were a Cowboys hater back in the Romo days, you have no idea just everything that he had to go through, that he had to stand, that he had to jump from obstacles to get to where he’s at today, ” Hanna said.
