Mike Kirby tabbed as new head coach for NMSU baseball team

It’s the beginning of a new day for New Mexico State University’s baseball program.

Monday, the university announced that Mike Kirby, an assistant baseball coach at Nebraska, will take over as head coach of NMSU’s baseball team.

Kirby has spent the last five seasons at Nebraska (2014-19) where he served as an assistant head coach.

While in Lincoln, Kirby worked with the infielders and served as the team’s third-base coach.

Kirby is accustomed to winning championships on the diamond.

In 1995, Kirby was an assistant baseball coach at Cal State Fullerton, the year the Titans won the NCAA National Championship.

During Kirby’s time at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers made three NCAA Regional appearances, and also captured a Big Ten regular-season title in 2017.

Kirby takes over an NMSU baseball program that went 38-17 last season, and tied for first place in the WAC, but the Aggies failed to make the NCAA tournament after suffering two losses in the WAC Tournament.

NMSU’s former head coach, Brian Green, left the program in early June after accepting a head coaching position at Washington State.

Kirby is the 11th head baseball coach in Aggie History.

“I would like to first thank Chancellor Arvizu, President Floros and Director of Athletics Mario Moccia for entrusting me with the Aggie baseball program,” Kirby said. “I’m excited about the opportunity and ready to embark on this journey and look forward to helping continue and build upon the success that has been paved by Coach Green and his staff.”

A formal introductory press conference is schedule to take place on Thursday, June 27, at 2:30 p.m.

The press conference is open to the public and will be followed by a meet and greet from 4-6 p.m. on the third floor of the Stan Fulton Athletic Center in the Danny Villanueva Victory Club.
