2018-2019 El Paso Area High School Sports Review

Volleyball
The 2018 volleyball season was memorable for several reasons but the main two would be that Campbell Bowden was named the El Paso Times Player of the Year for the third straight year and long-time Franklin coach, Flo Valdez, retired. Valdez is without doubt the best volleyball coach that the El Paso area has ever seen. Bowden will continue her remarkable career at Baylor University. Coronado, Chapin, and Fabens made deep playoff runs and several other teams had outstanding seasons. The following is a list of playoff qualifiers for both the 6A and 5A classifications and their playoff runs:
6A: Coronado, Franklin, Montwood , and Americas were the top four finishers in 6A.
Bi-District: Franklin defeated Midland 3-2; Montwood defeated Tascosa 3-2; Americas lost to Midland Lee 3-0; Coronado defeated Frenship 3-0
Area: Arlington Martin defeated Franklin 3-1; Weatherford defeated Montwood 3-0; Coronado defeated Fort Worth Paschal 3-0
Regional Quarter Finals: Coronado defeated Midland Lee 3-0
Regional Semi Finals Coronado loses to Flower Mound 3-1
5A:
Bi-District: Burges defeated Eastlake 3-0; Eastwood defeated EPHS 3-0; El Dorado defeated Jefferson 3-0; Chapin defeated Hanks 3-0
Area: Rider defeated Burges 3-0; Randall defeated Eastwood 3-0; Amarillo defeated El Dorado 3-0; Aledo defeated Chapin 3-1

Cross Country
Eastwood wins 5A State Championship
El Paso area teams and individuals usually do well at all levels in the Cross-Country state playoffs. The trend continued in 2018. Eastwood High School won the 5A state title. Team members for the state champion Troopers were Sergio Cuartas 11 th place , Juan Olmos 12 th place , Kayn Ontiveros 16 th place , Elias Perez 21 st place , Eddie Gallegos 32 nd place , Aaron Perez 63 rd place , and Nathan Hernandez 64 th place .
Brandon Seagraves of Cathedral wins Gold Medal in TAPPS 6A Cross Country
Several other athletes did well in the various Cross- Country state meets.
6A Boys: Americas finished 15 th in the state rankings. Coronado’s Liam Walsh finished in 10 th place and Coronado’s Nicholas Gonzalez place 21 st .
6A Girls: Coronado’s Jenelle Jaeger Darakjy finished in 11 th place while Franklin’s Eva Jess finished in 14 th place
5A Boys: Eastwood wins state championship. Burges finished 15 th in the team standings. Michael Abeyta of Hanks finished in 5 th place and Rodger Rivera of Hanks finished in 8 th place .
5A Girls: Eastwood finished in 11 th place . Aerial Garcia of Eastlake finished in 7 th place . Amaris Chavez of Eastlake finished in 13th place.
4A Boys San Elizario finishes in 3 rd Place
Team members for San Elizario were Edwin Gomez 2 nd place ; Irvin Vasquez 33 rd place ; Martin Pargas 34 th place ; Rene Arambula 36 th place
3A Boys Tornillo finished in 7 th place led by Eduardo Carrillo 22 nd place and Ofir Ortega 23 rd place .
TAPPS : Cathedral finished the 6A state meet in 4 th place led by Brandon Seagraves . Nicolas Maes finished 21 st , Luis Gomez finished in 30 th place , Fernando Anzures finished 31 st , and Steven Stresoe finished in 33 rd place .
Lydia Patterson finished in 6 th place in the team standings. Luis Mimbela finished in 9 th place while Sebastian Mimbella finished in 14 th place .
Loretto finished the 6A state meet in 7 th place . Brittney Martinez placed 12 th and Manuela Perches finished in 36 th place .
Lydia Patterson girls finished in 16 th place in the 5A girls state meet.
Football
El Paso area high school football reached a high point in 2014 with the great playoff run made by Canutillo . No team has come close to these heights since unless you want to count the two straight TAPPS state championships that Cathedral won in 2016 and 2017. The 2018 season was no different. El Paso area playoff teams made a quick exit in the state playoffs. Most were eliminated in the Bi-District round and the rest were gone after the Area round.
6A Playoff teams: Franklin, Coronado, Americas, and Pebble Hills.
Bi District: Franklin beat Midland 79-56; Coronado lost to Permian 42-0; Americas was defeated by Midland Lee 70-12; Pebble Hills lost to Tascosa 57-35.
Area: Euless Trinity defeated Franklin 44-28
5A Playoff teams: Eastwood, Eastlake, Chapin, Del Valle, Parkland, Irvin, Andress , Hanks, Austin, Canutillo , Burges , and Horizon
Bi-District: Abilene Cooper beat Eastwood 49-41; Eastlake lost to Caprock 42-17; Chapin lost to Lubbock Coronado 35-17; Del Valle beat Amarillo 21-10; Parkland beat Irvin 48-12; Andress beat Hanks 33-12; Austin beat Canutillo 38-10; and Burges beat Horizon 31-14.
Area: Del Valle lost to Denton Ryan 42-14; Parkland lost to Canyon Randall 38-28; Andress lost to Wichita Falls Rider 41-10; Lubbock Coronado beat Austin 45-0; and Burges lost to Northwest 48-14.
4A Playoff teams: Clint, Fabens , San Elizario , and Mountain View
Bi District: Clint was defeated by Big Spring 28-27; Fabens lost to Seminole 42-7; San Elizario lost to Andrews 57-6; and Mountain View lost to San Angelo Lake View 28-21.
3A Bi District: Tornillo lost to Shallowater 63-0 and Anthony lost to Abernathy 68-21
Team Tennis:
Franklin and Coronado have dominated Team Tennis in the El Paso area for years and 2018 was no exception. Both teams had deep playoff runs before being defeated. Coronado reached the Regional Quarter Finals and Franklin made it to the Regional Semi Finals.
6A: Franklin, Americas, Montwood , and Coronado represented the El Paso area in the annual team tennis tournament.
Bi-District: Franklin defeated Midland; Americas lost to Frenship ; Montwood lost to Tascosa ; and Coronado defeated Odessa Permian
Area: Franklin defeated Arlington Martin and Coronado defeated Arlington Lamar
Regional Quarter Finals: Franklin defeated Abilene and Coronado lost to Tascosa
Regional Semi Finals: Franklin lost to Lewisville Marcus

Bi District: EPHS defeated Riverside; Bel Air beat Burges ; Eastwood ousted Austin; and Chapin defeated Parkland
Area: Wylie defeated EPHS ; Randall defeated Bel Air; Amarillo defeated Eastwood; and Aledo defeated Chapin
4A:
Bi District: Fort Stockton defeated Fabens ; Andrews beat Mountain View; Seminole defeated Clint; and San Elizario defeated Monahans
Area: Dumas defeated San Elizario
