Remembering Stan Quintana, football player & El Paso coach dies at 74

When talking about Borderland legends of the gridiron, Stan Quintana is easily on that list.

A star player at the University of New Mexico, Quintana went on to coach at several high schools in El Paso.

His teachings still live on by current coaches in the El Paso area.

Quintana’s son tells ABC-7 his father died Saturday in Florida at the age of 74.

In the early 60s Quintana led the UNM lobos to back to back WAC titles.

In the 70s Quintana moved to El Paso where he coached football at Jefferson, Irvin, Burges, Coronado and Bowie.

Quintana left in 1981 to coach wide receiver’s at his alma mater, UNM for 8 years, but then again returned to teach in El Paso.

Quintana had a total of 32 years teaching and coaching in the Sun City.

He was inducted into the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Hall of Honor in 2003 and into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame that same year.

In a statment to ABC-7, Quintana’s son, Stan Quintana said “Stan Quintana was the epitome of a quiet leader who led through his actions instead of words. He committed full to all of his endeavors and would move mountains for those he loved.”
