Cigarette lighter mistaken for gun triggers lockout at El Paso’s Coronado High School

A cigarette lighter mistaken for a gun triggered a brief lockout Tuesday afternoon at El Paso’s Coronado High School, officials for the El Paso Independent School District said.

Word of the situation initially came from a school district trustee who posted on social media that everyone was safe.

The district said despite the false alarm over the cigarette lighter, a security sweep of the school was being conducted as a precautionary measure.

There were no significant disruptions to classes, EPISD indicated.
