EL PASO, Texas- The new EPISD mask policy goes into affect today.

The new rule gives visitors, staff and students the option to opt out of wearing a mask while on District property.

According to the new provision students in athletics and fine arts are exempt while competing, practicing or attending events unless they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days.

If a student tests positive for COVID-19 they must isolate for 5 days then upon their return must wear a mask.

ABC-7 spoke with EPISD spokesperson Gustavo Reveles who said “The schools will know exactly which children have an opt out form filled out and that way we can continue to operating and providing instruction as normal.”

The rule will run until February 15th at which time the EPISD will get with El Paso health officials for further guidance going forward.
