Las Cruces food pantry hosting 24-hour long “hunger strike” fund raising event
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Casa de Peregrinos 4th annual Hunger Strike event kicks off on Thursday, September 22 at 8:30 a.m. at the facility located at 999 West Amador with breakfast before its 8:30 launch time. The advocacy and fundraising event aims to raise $60,000 this year.
The hunger strike consists of a 24-hour fast from food as well as advocacy for the Casa de Peregrinos mission through social media and personal interactions.
“This is an opportunity for us at Casa de Peregrinos and the community participants to have a day of solidarity with our neighbors that struggle with food insecurity in their everyday lives,” said Lorenzo Alba, Casa de Peregrinos Executive Director.
With rising food prices and the ongoing impact of growing inflation, this year's Hunger Strike fund raiser has an ambitious goal. According to Alba, the cost of food has increased by over 20% over the last two years.
Casa de Peregrinos is also continually striving to be driven by its mission to end hunger while mobilizing resources that build strong, diverse, and inclusive relationships and partnerships in the community. It is evident by the work and partnership in assisting with the current migrant situation; the emergency food pantry is partners with Border Serving Corps providing food assistance for the overflow of migrants in the Las Cruces community. Another partnership is with Doña Ana County through its Rural Food Initiative in providing services throughout rural Doña Ana County. With the City of Las Cruces, various programs serve the Greater Las Cruces area and its citizens.
