New study examines amount of gun violence victims in 2023
EL PASO, Texas -- A new study from the Gun Violence Archive is shedding a new light on how gun violence has already taken a massive toll in 2023.
The study has reported that shootings have killed 6,278 people so far in 2023, as of Thursday, February 23rd. That number averages out to be 116 gun violence victims per day.
The Gun Violence Archive is reporting that 56% of 2023's gun deaths are due to suicide, averaging 66 deaths per day.
ABC-7 spoke with Isidro Torres, Executive Director for The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) El Paso about the conversations people should have if they are concerned for a loved one that may be showing signs of suicidal thoughts.
"If you do find that maybe they do need extra support, you can reach out to the crisis line, the local crisis line that's available 24/7, 915-779-1800, or the National suicide line, 988," said Torres.
Also included in the study from the Gun Violence Archive, 227 teenagers and 36 children have been killed due to gun violence.
